Cheng Ruan, MD, is board-certified in internal medicine and the founder of the Texas Center for Lifestyle Medicine. After completing his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University in College Station, he went on to earn his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. Dr. Ruan comes from a family of Chinese medical doctors. His background and education allow him to combine beneficial aspects of both Eastern and Western medicine approaches to achieve health and wellness.

In medical school, and throughout his residency at New York-Presbyterian/Queens Hospital where Dr. Ruan received some of the best medical training in New York City, he felt instruction in nutrition and preventative care was lacking. To remedy this knowledge gap, Dr. Ruan began researching the concepts of functional medicine, Chinese medicine, and studying various nutrition journals. He made it a personal quest to gain a thorough understanding of how nutrition affects our bodies and health.

In 2015, Dr. Ruan observed that recommending the current dietary guidelines to his patients with Type 2 diabetes made it extremely difficult for them to reduce or eliminate their medication. By using insights from his extensive nutrition research, he created a unique diabetes reversing eating program. Dr. Ruan discovered that, in addition to treating chronic diseases, many medical conditions could also be reversed through optimizing nutrition.

These successes reinforce Dr. Ruan’s philosophy that practicing medicine can include Eastern and Western medicine theories using food as medicine and focusing on natural healing to prevent and reverse many chronic diseases. While all chronic illnesses cannot be cured, focusing on disease prevention through nutrition can end unnecessary suffering and improve quality of life for many people.
